The Brand

“I was really frustrated by dirty grills,” recalls Ethan Woods, founder of Grillbot. It was 2010, and Woods, a New York City real estate agent, found himself at his cabin in the country, staring at a grimy barbecue grill.

That moment of frustration sparked an idea: What if there was a robot that could clean grills automatically?

Little did Woods know that this simple idea would lead him to create the world’s first barbecue grill cleaning robot, mortgage his house, invest $200,000 of his own money, and eventually scale to over $920,000 in monthly revenue.

Grillbot’s mission is simple yet powerful: “To enrich your life, by simplifying it.” The brand believes that by taking the grunt work out of cleaning your grill, you’ll have more time to enjoy friends, family, and the party.

The Challenge

Despite the initial success and recognition, including being featured on major TV shows and making Oprah’s favorite gifts list, Grillbot faced significant challenges in early 2023:

  1. Low sales volume and revenue
  2. Inconsistent ad performance on Facebook
  3. Limited attribution and tracking capabilities

“We knew we had a great product,” says Woods. “But we were struggling to reach our target audience effectively and scale our sales.”

That’s when Grillbot partnered with Adacted, a digital marketing agency specializing in scaling e-commerce brands.

The Solution

Adacted’s strategy for Grillbot was multifaceted, focusing on:

  1. Scaling Facebook/Meta advertising
  2. Implementing seasonal campaign focus
  3. Adopting a multi-channel approach
  4. Continuous creative development
  5. Adaptive budget management

“Robert and Chris at Adacted have been a pleasure to work with this past year,” Woods notes.

“They truly care about my business and have exceeded expectations when it comes to professionalism and results.”

1. Scaling Facebook/Meta Advertising

Adacted dramatically increased Grillbot’s Facebook ad spend, going from approximately $50/day to over $10,000/day during peak periods. This was achieved through:

  • Continuous testing and optimization of ad creatives (images, videos, copy)
  • Honing in targeting for gift-oriented campaigns (e.g., Father’s Day)
  • Implementing multifaceted ABO testing, Advantage+ scaling, and CBO scaling campaigns

2. Seasonal Campaign Focus

Recognizing the seasonal nature of grill-related products, Adacted developed targeted campaigns for key periods:

  • Major pushes for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Black Friday, and Christmas
  • Creation of specific ad creatives for holidays like St. Patrick’s Day and 4th of July

3. Multi-Channel Approach

We didn’t just focus on Facebook. We integrated:

  • Facebook ads with Amazon sales
  • TV advertising
  • Cross-channel attribution monitoring

4. Creative Development

To keep the ads fresh and engaging, we:

  • Regularly produced new video content, including UGC and professional studio shoots
  • Continuously tested new ad formats and creatives

5. Adaptive Budget Management

Our approach to budget management was dynamic:

  • Rapidly scaling ad spend during high-performing periods
  • Quick budget adjustments based on performance metrics

The Results

  • In just one year, from June 2023 to June 2024, we saw:
    • Nearly a 4x increase in order volume
    • Over 4x growth in net sales
    • This represents a transformative leap in both customer reach and revenue generation
  • Order Volume Increase:
    • From ~25 orders/day in early 2023 to peaks of 400-500+ orders/day in 2024
  • ROAS (Return on Ad Spend):
    • Consistently aimed for and often achieved 3x+ ROAS on Facebook ads
    • Blended ROAS (including TV and Amazon) often exceeded 6x during peak periods
  • Facebook Ad Spend Scaling:
    • Scaled from ~$500/day in early 2023 to peaks of $10,000+/day in 2024

Key Milestones

  • March 2023: Relaunch of Facebook ads after a pause
  • June 2023: First major Father’s Day campaign, reaching 1,873 orders
  • November-December 2023: Massive growth during Black Friday and Christmas season
  • May-June 2024: Record-breaking Father’s Day campaign, with daily Facebook ad spend exceeding $10,000

Lessons Learned

  1. Seasonality Impact: Grillbot’s sales are highly seasonal, with major spikes around Father’s Day and the holiday season.
  2. Cross-Channel Attribution: Facebook ads were driving Amazon sales, highlighting the importance of looking at blended ROAS across channels.
  3. Creative Iteration: Continuous testing and development of new ad creatives was crucial for maintaining performance.
  4. Targeting Strategy: Advertising to women for gift-oriented campaigns (e.g., Father’s Day) proved highly effective.
  5. Rapid Scaling: The ability to quickly scale ad spend during high-performing periods was key to maximizing revenue.
"Robert and Chris at Adacted have been a pleasure to work with this past year. They truly care about my business and have exceeded expectations when it comes to professionalism and results. I am very happy I met them and look forward to continued growth within facebook and beyond."
Ethan Woods, Founder of Grillbot
